Bountiful Benefits of Our Verbena Collection

Lemon verbena (Aloysia citriodora)—also referred to as lemon beebrush—is a highly fragrant white-flowered shrub that grows in warm climates. Its leaves and stalk are rich in a heady lemon-scented essential oil that can be used in everything from tea and sachets to skin- and hair-care products. At Pharmacopia, we love lemon verbena not only for its invigorating citrusy scent but also for its health benefits, which is why we created an entire better-for-you product line around this powerful plant.

Pharmacopia VerbianaVerbena’s uplifting essential oils

When added to our Pharmacopia Verbena Body Care Collection, with other essential oils of mint, basil, litsea cubeba, lemongrass, and cedarwood, our Verbena products uplift the spirits and rejuvenate the senses. The best way to describe our Verbena scent: it’s a good mood in scent form.

What are the health benefits of lemon verbena?

Lemon verbena is considered a medicinal plant because of its powerful essential oils that contain antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Researchers have found that extracts from lemon verbena contain powerful polyphenols, antioxidant plant compounds that help your body fight free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can damage cells and have been linked to cancer.

Many things can trigger the development of free radicals, including exposure to chemicals, the sun’s ultraviolet rays, pollution, and cigarette smoke. Lemon verbena contains polyphenols like flavonoids and an antioxidant compound called verbascoside that help protect against cellular damage from free radicals.

Lemon verbena is also rich in anti-inflammatory compounds like limonene. This natural chemical has been shown to help protect against cancer and may even help boost heart health. Lemon verbena may also help reduce insomnia as well as anxiety and stress.

Why lemon verbena is good for the skin—and hair

The same properties that make lemon verbena good for health also make it incredibly effective for skin and hair. More specifically, lemon verbena essential oils may help:

  • Keep skin clear: Verbena essential oils contain antiseptic or bacteria-busting antimicrobial properties that make them powerful for cleansing skin and clearing breakouts, which are triggered by bacteria. These essential oils can also help to regulate the level of natural oils in the skin—without drying out the skin.

Pharmacopia’s Verbena Body Bar gently cleanses without stripping natural oils from the skin. Hydrating shea butter and vitamin E in our Body Bar also help keep skin soft and smooth.

One dedicated user had this to say about our Verbena Body Bar: “I love this soap! …Using body gel and a loofah was causing body acne and making my already pesky eczema worse. Now, my acne has reduced significantly and my eczema is almost gone. Not only that, but the soap smells so good and feels amazing!”

  • Reduce dry, itchy skin: Lemon verbena’s essential oils are anti-inflammatory; they can help calm eczema, which causes dry, itchy patches of skin. They can also help soothe skin and reduce redness and irritation.

That’s why, in our Verbena Body Lotion, we combine lemon verbena with hydrating plant compounds like shea butter, jojoba oil, aloe vera, and chamomile extract. This potent combination leaves skin feeling velvety smooth and soft without feeling greasy. Plus, because this lotion—like all of our products—is formulated without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances or dyes, it won’t irritate sensitive skin.

As one regular customer has said: “Love the fragrance and the results—leaves you smooth and nice after the shower, not dry and ‘chapped.’”

  • Soothe the scalp: Lemon verbena’s skin-calming qualities make it the perfect ingredient for the scalp, which is why we created Pharmacopia’s Verbena Shampoo and Verbena Conditioner. Not only does this shampoo/conditioner combo help soothe the scalp, it also enhances shine without stripping hair of its natural oils.

This is also thanks to the additional natural and organic plant ingredients, like aloe vera and jojoba oil, that we mix into our shampoos and conditioners. (The shampoo also contains soothing chamomile extract while the conditioner also has hydrating olive leaf extracts.) As a result, our Verbena Shampoo and Conditioner leave hair shiny, silky soft, and manageable.

One of our fans had this to say about our Verbena Shampoo and Conditioner: “Makes my hair so shiny and also keeps my oily roots at bay for longer than other shampoos/conditioners while still adding moisture and detangling the ends of my hair.”

  • Help slow the signs of aging: Verbena’s powerful antioxidant properties can help fight free radicals, which are a top cause of premature aging of the skin.

This is just one reason why using our Verbena Body Wash regularly can keep body skin cleansed—and radiant. The coconut, chamomile, aloe, and green tea extracts in our Verbena Body Wash also help to soothe and hydrate the skin.

As one Pharmacopia fan has said: “My skin is very sensitive to body wash and I usually break out on my arms and back, but this leaves me feeling silky smooth and I don’t break out. The scent is a great plus.”

The healing power of plants and essential oils still amazes us every day at Pharmacopia. By doing our part to harness these natural benefits in all of our skin and hair care products, we’re bringing you the very best nature has to offer. And that continues to motivate us every single day to do what we do—and helps us to sleep well at night, too!
